Sue was one of seventeen children born to Jule Thibedeau and his wife, Mary Howley. She married Henry Leroy Hanes; one of nine children born to David Q. Hanes and his wife, Nancy C. Moore. Hank and Sue recited their wedding vows on June 19, 1918 at Shell Lake in Washburn County, Wisconsin. They had 4 sons who preceded them in death. Sue served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. Sue, her husband Hank and son Gordon all served in World War II. She outlived her precious sons and her beloved husband. Sue had fiery red hair, was small in stature; but could be a determined spitfire (as my Uncle Hank use to say). Aunt Sue was always bright and cheery even with all the tragedies in her life.

Hillside School was located north of Springbrook, Washburn Co., WI, about halfway between Gull Lake and Hay Lake. In 1916 - 1917 the teacher at this school was Susie C. THIBEDEAU, and the school officers were: Mrs. Mary LEUTHNER, clerk; Mathias DENNINGER, Director and Mrs. Edith PARKER, treasurer. The following list of students was from the 1916 - 1917 school year. ... HANES, Donald; HANES, (David) Marvin; HANES, (Samuel) Veach; ... ." (These three and Hank are my grandmother's brothers.)
NEWS ARTICLE: Chicago American; Chicago, Illinois. Article dated December 5, 1923; telling of the horrific fire that took the lives of little Warren and Bobbie Hanes. Excerpt " . . . Three small boys, asleep in an upstairs bedroom at 2121 East 93rd Street (Chicago, Illinois), were trapped in flames last night. Two were killed and the other so severely burned he is not expected to live. While the fire was raging about them, the children's mother, Mrs. H. L. Hanes, made frantic efforts to reach them and called hysterically for the police to save her babies. . . . The rescuers were unable to get to 10 (should be 22) months old Warren, and he burned to death in his crib. His two little brothers - Gordon aged 3 months, and 3 year old Bobbie - were rushed unconcious to the hospital, where Bobbie died early today. It was shortly after 9 o'clock that a neighbor hurried over to tell Mrs. Hanes that her bungalow was afire. Her husband, an electrical worker, was drilling with his National Guard Company at an armory, and she was sitting in the parlor with her mother, Mrs. Mary Thibedeau, her brother Harry, and two guests, Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Stark. . . . "You see," she sobbed later, "Baby would never go to sleep if I was around, so I had to leave him alone for awhile after putting him to bed." The fire was started, it is believed, by an overheated stove. By the time the neighbor reported the flames, they had gained such intensity, that Mrs. Hanes could not reach her babies. "My God! Save my children" she screamed over the telephone. Lieut. Charles Stadfield and policemen, Ziegler and Klamaner reached the house within a few minutes. . . . They dashed up the stairs into the blazing room and found Bobbie and Gordon. The legs and arms of the former had been burned to the bone. Attempts to reach Warren whose crib had stood only a few feet from the stove were futile. Firemen carried his charred body from the bungalow after getting the flames under control. . . . "
