Berdines was born on the island of Karmøy (Årvoll farm) to Ola Asbjørnsen and Olene Olsdtr. He came to America between 1879 and 1881 and settled in Chicago. On 9/1/1883 in Chicago he married Mathilda Holmberg from Sweden. They were the parents of seven children: Anna Olena, Bertina May, Augusta, Ovedia, Caroline, Oscar, and Berince. Berdines and his wife and family moved to Sioux City, Iowa for a time in the late 1880's but later moved back to Chicago by 1900. Berdines was employed as contractor carpenter.
