OLIVER, Robert H., age 93, passed away peacefully at Sunrise of Bon Air on Friday, December 9, 2016. He was surrounded by family. He was the beloved husband of Laverne C. Oliver for 65 years, until her death in 2010 at age 83. He was the father of Bob, Jerry, (wife, Marybeth) and Tim Oliver; as well as grandfather of Lauren Oliver (James) and Ryan Oliver. He is survived by his sister, Agnes McNeill of Great Bridge, Va.; brother, Derwood Oliver of Gastonia, N.C.; and sister-in-law, Eleanor C. Thomas of Valdosta, Ga.; as well as many beloved nephews and nieces.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatre as a Gunners Mate 3C on the U.S.S. Reeves (DE-156) from 1943 to 1945. Before serving in the U.S. Navy, he was an avid baseball and football player at Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, Va. and Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va. He was a longtime member of Fairmount Christian Church in Mechanicsville and retired employee of Nabisco after 30 years of service.

In particular, the family would like to thank the staff at Sunrise of Bon Air and Encompass Hospice. The family will receive friends at the Woody Funeral Home, Parham Chapel. 1771 N. Parham Rd. from 6:30 to 8:30pm Wednesday, December 14, 2016. Funeral service will be 1:00pm Thursday, December 15, 2016 at Fairmount Christian Church, 6502 Creighton Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. Interment with military honors to follow at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in honor of his life to the Wounded Warrior Project or a charitable organization of your choice.
