Swedish Politician. Born Ylva Anna Maria Lindh, the daughter of Nancy and Steffan Lindh, she first became interested in politics at age 12 when she began a lifelong association with the Social Democratic Party when she joined their Youth League. She attended the University of Uppsala where she earned a law degree. She was elected to the Riksdag in 1982, and quickly rose through the party ranks, serving as chairman of the Social Democratic Youth from 1984 to 1990. When the Social Democrats regained power in 1994, she was named Minister of environment. In 1998, she became foreign minister under Prime Minister Goran Persson. She was seen as his possible successor. She was vehemently pro-European Union, and became the leading campaigner in the push to replace the Swedish crown with the euro-dollar. On the afternoon of 10 September 2003, she was attacked and stabbed multiple times by a lone assailant while she was shopping in Stockholm. After nine hours of surgery, she seemed to improve before complication led to a second surgery, during the course of which she was pronounced dead. She was 46.
