Martha Alice Calhoon was the daughter of Thomas Hayes and Mary Jane (Robinson) Calhoon. She married William Pinkney Thornton on Dec. 24, 1876 in Johnson County, IL. They had 5 children. One of their children was Alfonso D. Thornton, known as Doc Thornton, who delivered a lot of babies in Goreville. He drove a horse and buggy to do house calls. The other 4 children are Hazel Thornton, who was Troy Thornton's father; Thomas Thornton, who was Will Allen Thornton's father; Flora E., and Mary J.
Flora E. and Mary J. are both buried in Calhoon Cemetery. Their tombstones both have "Thornion" as last names instead of Thornton, but both have daughter of W. P. and M. A. Thornton on tombstone.
