Adolph Andrew Drews, 87, of Wisconsin Rapids, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at Riverview Hospital.

Adolph was born in Chicago on Dec. 7, 1923, to Ambrose and Mary (Jurek) Drzewiecki. He married Barbara L. Thompson on Oct. 10, 1988, in Wisconsin Rapids.

Adolph served his country in the United States Marine Corps from March 1943 to January 1946 in the South Pacific. He actively participated in WWII at: Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, Saipan, Mariana Islands; Tinian, Mariana Islands; and Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal.

Adolph began his career of 47 years as a truck driver for Terminal Transport and later drove for American Freight Systems, retiring in 1988.

He was a member of the Teamsters Local Union 705, Past Commander of Stanley Barabasz "PLAV" VFW Post 72 of Chicago and a member of the Buckley-Baldwin VFW Post 2534.

Adolph loved driving the big rigs during his working days, and enjoyed fishing and watching the Cubs and Bears in his free time. He was proud of his service in the Marine Corps and the VFW. He was a beloved husband, father, and devoted brother.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Doreen (Scott) Gibrich of Hoffman Estates, Ill.; one sister, Celia Drews of Niles, Ill.; one sister-in-law, Eleanor Drews of Niles, Ill.; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Edward Drews, Theodore Drews, Marion Drews and Chester Drzewiecki; and one sister, Stella Mamola.

Services will be at noon Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Taylor, Vollert and Jennings Funeral Home, 2201 Chestnut St. in Wisconsin Rapids. Rev. John Steiner will officiate. Entombment will be at a later date in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Ill.
