Fought in the 48th Ohio Infantry, Co. D. Severely wounded at the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862. Taken prisoner and sent to the Confederate Prison Hospital in Macon, Georgia - the Oglethorpe Hospital. Albert died June 20, 1862 at the age of 38. He was buried in the Confederate Prison Cemetery on June 29, 1862.

Albert was the husband of Eliza Jane (Luckey) West (1824-1868). He was the father of five children: Martha Jane, William Harrison, Daniel, Sylvester and Sanford Marvin West. Albert was the oldest son of Harrison West, Sr. and Jane "Polly" (McFadden) West.

According to the U.S. Civil War Roll of Honor, 1861-1865, Albert was buried at Andersonville National Cemetery and classed with the "unknown dead."
