William Murfree Abernethy was the son of Dr. Jesse Jones and Mary Moore (Murfree) Abernathy. He was born 13 Mar 1851, Rutherford Co., Tennessee and died 30 Jun 1931, Atascosa Co., Texas. His mother passed away when he was a toddler and his father married Susan Elizabeth (Sumner) Williams and they began to have children. When William Murfree Abernethy was a young teenager, the family moved to Alto, Franklin Co., Tennessee.

It is of interest to note that Murfreesboro, a city with a population of about 120,000 people, located in and the county seat of Rutherford County, located in middle Tennessee, was named for Hardy Murfree, gret-grandfather of William Murfree Abernethy. He made several trips up the trails to Kansas with the cowmen of his day. Later he taught school several years in Gonzales and adjoining counties. He was married to Jane (Eliza Gertrude?) Bundick of Gonzales County. A daugher, Zella Cook of Pleasanton, and William Abernethy Cook, a grandson, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. F. P. Cook, survive. Mrs. Abernethy died several years ago. Judge Abernethy came to Atasosa County in the middle 90s, shortly after the late Mathis Avant was elected sheriff of Atascosa County, and served as chief deputy sheriff until 1903, when he was elected county judge, which office he held until 1913. Upon his retlrement from the office of county judge at age 60, he successfully passed the bar examination before the examiners at San Antonio, and thereafter practiced law, with offices at Jourdanton and Pleasanton, successively, retiring from active practice a few years ago. He owned a large farm six miles northwest of Pleasanton, in the artesian belt, which he and his son-in-law developed 10 years ago into an extensive berry and fruit growing enterprise, shipping this spring the first full carload of Bruce plums to leave Atascosa County.
