He came over from Germany with his father and mother -- his father was washed overboard with the funds to pay for the voyage during a storm. His mother took a job, working for the ship's captain - a certain Mr Jewel who had a daughter Cornelia. Frederick was also indentured to a Mr Shurty of Pennsylvania for a period of 6 years from whom he learned the trade of being a wheelwright.

He was responsible for supplying George Washington's troops, when they encamped at Morristown, during the hard winter of 1777.
