Social Activist, Lawyer. He was Susan B. Anthony's attorney at her 1872 trial for illegally voting in the election. He also served as Lieutenant Governor of New York in 1857 and a Court of Appeals Judge. He was asked to accept the nomination for Vice-President to Abraham Lincoln in his bid for the Presidency, but declined.
