Murray Bloom, Cardiac Device Innovator, dies at 72. Loving husband, wonderful friend, gentle and understanding father and grandfather, intuitive, innovative and inventive entrepreneur, and avid jazz enthusiast, Murray Bloom, aged 72, died peacefully Sept. 18, 2011.
As the patriarch of cardiac electrophysiological instrumentation and himself a Horatio Alger-type figure, Murray, under the banner of the company he founded, Bloom Associates Ltd., designed, manufactured and distributed cardiac stimulating, recording and monitoring devices used for the evaluation of arrhythmias of the heart.
His designs helped usher in the modern era of cardiac electrophysiology. This niche business, which distributed his products worldwide, was sold to Fischer Imaging in 1992 and continues to this day as a part of the Fischer Medical Technologies product line.
A jazz writer, arranger, player and producer, Murray's love of music took root at a very young age on the street corners of West Philadelphia and flourished throughout his life. His fondness for jazz added color, enjoyment and breath to his life, opening doors at Florida Atlantic University (the Jazz Department essentially adopted him) and within the Jazz community in Philadelphia, which provided him a musical home. His arrangements has been played by many bands and immortalized on several albums.
Born and raised in Philadelphia on July 24, 1939, Murray spent most of his later years in Villanova, PA, annually migrating to Highland Beach, Florida, each winter.
Besides his wife, Susan, he is survived by his daughters, Celia, Pamela and Amy, and his grandchildren, Alexandra, Daniel, Anya, Emily and Sophie. He is remembered fondly by the many friends, associates and clients he met along his journey and for the innovations and inventions by which so many lives were saved.
