RUSSELL VEST SR., 86, of Hopewell Township died Wednesday morning, Dec. 8, 2010, at South Jersey Healthcare Regional Medical Center in Vineland. He had been a patient at The Cumberland Manor since April and a hospital patient for the last three weeks.
The husband of Jean E. (nee Wilson) Martin Waddington Vest, he was born in Williamson, W.Va., and was the son of the late Charlie Huston Vest and the late Lura Mae (nee Morefield) Vest. A resident of Hopewell Township since his marriage to Jean in 1990, he previously lived on Pindale Drive for many years.
Mr. Vest was employed as a mechanic at the EI DuPont Company Chambersworks Plant in Deepwater. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the 199th Infantry.
He was a member of the Italian-American Civic Club and the American Legion Post 273 in Maderia Beach, Fla. He spent winters in recent years in Florida and enjoyed fishing there and also in the Delaware Bay.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Russell Vest Jr. of Lancaster, Pa., Patricia Stokes (Lee) of Florida, Robert Vest, David Vest (Maudeen) of Colorado, and Charles "Chick" Vest (Carol) of Hopewell Township; one stepdaughter, Sandra Harrington (Michael) of Newark, Del.; nine grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Mr. Vest was predeceased by his first wife, Enes [Calandra] Vest, in 1989 and two brothers, Clarence Vest and Claude Vest.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service Saturday afternoon, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton.
The interment will take place at Overlook Cemetery in Bridgeton.
