Alice was born in Somerville, Burleson Co., Texas, on September 1, 1906, the youngest of four children. Her father was a hotel manager and may have been the manager of the Harvey House in Somerville. The family soon moved and her father, C.W. Elmore, was hired as the manager of the Plaza Hotel located in downtown Rosenberg, Texas, at the railroad siding.
Alice started working at an early age. While unloading railroad freight cars, workers would, occasionally, spill feed grain from burlap feed bags. Alice used discarded burlap bags to pick up the spilled grain at the railroad siding and resell it. While still young, she was hired as a bill collector for a downtown grocery store. Most customers purchased groceries on credit and paid at the end of the month. Alice was given the past due bills and hand delivered them on the street. It must have been embarrassing to have a young child call out your name in public for collections and hand you a grocery bill.
