The Eutaw Flag
Jane Riley Elliott was the daughter of Jane (Stanyarne) and Charles Elliott who owned a large estate, Sandy Hill, near Charleston. Jane was engaged to Colonel William Washington and on a visit to Sandy Hill he mentioned that his troops did not have a flag. Jane quickly grabbed her scissors and cut a large square from a damask curtain and giving it to the Colonel said, "Let this be your flag".
It was a special flag to Washington being that it was a gift from the woman he loved and would marry. The flag was carried in every battle in which Colonel Washington led his troops.
Today, that flag, a relic of the Revolutionary War, belongs to the Washington Light Infantry (named after President George Washington) in Charleston, SC which was organized in 1807. It is still in good condition and is used on special occasions.
