Civil War Union Army Officer. Born in England, he came to America at a young age and settled in Marshalltown, Iowa. While in Marshalltown, he served as the Marshall County Auditor, United States Revenue Collector, and Treasurer of the Marshalltown school system. In July 1861 he was mustered into Company D, 5th Iowa Volunteer Infantry as a 1st Lieutenant. He served under Maj. General John Pope in Missouri and went on to rise in rank to Colonel and command the 17th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. At the Battle of Corinth, October 3, 1862, while Major, was detailed to assume command of the 17th Iowa Infantry, which had lost many of its own field officers. Major Banbury's performance in leading the 17th Iowa to capture the colors of the 40th Mississippi Infantry, along with more than a hundred prisoners, was noted in reports of the battle. This success led to his promotion to Colonel around April 23, 1863. As the commander of the Third Brigade, Third Division of the Fifth Army Corps, he was involved in the siege and capture of Vicksburg, and served as the Post Guard Commander. He moved to California in 1874, built the first home in Pasadena, and became one of Pasadena's leading citizens. It was the pending sale of his property along the Arroyo Seco, and the need to relocate graves that were situated on that property, which prompted the creation of Mountain View Cemetery. He served his community as the San Gabriel Township Justice, the Chairman of the first town school board, Treasurer of Pasadena and the County of Los Angeles and as a member of the State Legislature for two years. He was also an early member of the Pasadena Hunt Club, founders of today's Rose Parade.
