Tena was born on December 19, 1926 in Owensboro, Kentucky to the late Paul Joseph and Willy (Long) Mills. Family was her life and she was surrounded by loved ones in her final days. She was affectionately known as Tena, and was wife, mother of nine, and kind friend to all who knew her.
Faith and a giving spirit were intrinsic parts of Tena's character. She was a member of the Little Sisters of the Poor Auxiliary, and a regular volunteer for many years. She was a member of St. Benedict Parish, and a member of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. Tena is best described by a quote from The Tempest, by William Shakespeare, "We are such stuff as dreams are made on."
Tena is survived by husband and former State Senator Paul Bitz. Her nine children are Mike Bitz (deceased), Greg Bitz, Cindy Korff, Bonnie Reinhart, Karen Stewart, Kevin Bitz (deceased), Kim Patrick Bitz, Terance David Bitz, and Roger Bitz (deceased).
She was blessed with 16 grandchildren: Tammy, Tracy, Jennifer, Dale, Darcy, Dawn, Tim, Andrew, Kevin, Heather, Holly, Julie, Jocelyn, Matthew, Ryan, and Douglas, plus 16 great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit Monday, September 12, 2011, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Avenue. A memorial service immediately follows with Father Harold Hammerstein, OSB, officiating. Entombment will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at a later date.
