US Congressman. He was elected, as a member of the Whig Party, to represent New York's 31st District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1851 to 1853. He also served as County Judge from 1840 to 1845, and as a Member of the New York State Senate for the 32nd District from 1848 to 1849. After attending local schools, he managed a lumber yard, became a sailor, ran a hotel, and then entered the mercantile business for 20 years. He was appointed by President Jackson as postmaster at Olean, New York on December 23, 1830. He was on the board of supervisors of Olean in 1830, 1831, 1836, and 1838. Originally he had his interment in Oak Lawn Cemetery, he was reinterment on April 29, 1896 in Mount View Cemetery.
