Jean Lowe (nee Lobb), long-time resident of Grande Prairie, passed away at the QEII Hospital Saturday April 3, 2004 at the age of 70 years.

She leaves behind her immediate family, numerous aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and many beloved friends.

She was predeceased by her mother Diana Hanson, infant sister Yvonne Lobb, son Leonard Lowe and daughter-in-law Karen Howard.

Jean was born on November 24, 1933 in Red Deer, Alberta. When she was very young her family moved to Chisholm and later Slave Lake where she spent her childhood with a loving extended family.

After nursing school, business classes and a brief tour in the air force, Jean and her two small children settled in Grande Prairie where she met and married Sam in 1958. Jean and Sam raised their family in Grande Prairie with Jean actively participating in her children's education. She was particularly enthusiastic about their musical endeavours. She joined the MAPA Orchestra and learned to play the viola and played the bells in the GP Marching Band.

In 1993 she retired from the workforce for good after 11 years as administrator of the Grande Spirit Foundation. This allowed her to pursue her love of gardening, passion for genealogy, sewing, berry-picking and enabled her to spoil her grandchildren full time.

Jean was a committed volunteer working on many projects big and small. Her strong commitment and dedication to the Peace District Ostomy Association for 25 years enabled the local chapter to fulfill many of its goals. Jean attended several conferences in Canada and the United States.

As a member of the Royal Purple for 50 years, she held many positions including Honoured Royal Lady in 1998. Most recently she was instrumental in establishing and maintaining the Royal Purple Flower Bed at the Grande Prairie Museum. Jean was also involved with the Canadian Mental Health Association, serving as Alberta President in the early '80s, Job's Daughters and the Kinettes.

The joy of Jean's life was her five grandchildren. She was "Granny" not only to them but all of their friends too. She helped with many projects, there wasn't anything Granny wouldn't bake, sew or build for them out of the "treasures" in her basement.

Funeral service will be at Christ Church Anglican on Thursday, April 8, 2004 at 1 p.m. Interment to follow at the Grande Prairie Cemetery. Fellowship will follow at the Elks Hall, 10806-106 Street, Grande Prairie.
