U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of Alabama, in 1962, from the University of Alabama Law School, in 1965, was admitted to the bar, in 1965 and was assistant district attorney, of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, (1965-76) He also was a member of the Alabama Army National Guard and a Alabama State circuit judge, (1977-85). In 1987, he was elected as a Democrat to the One Hundredth Congress and to the next two succeeding Congresses, serving until 1993. After leaving Congress, he was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama and served until his death.
