Barbara (Betty) Helen Stefan Beamesderfer, 90, died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon on Sunday, August 21, 2011, after a brief illness. She was born on February 6, 1921, in Lebanon, the third daughter of Joseph Dorner Stefan and Margaret Brenner Stefan. Her parents were immigrants from the towns of Palanka and Brestowatz region of Austria-Hungary (now in Serbia), and she was very proud of her "Donauschwaben" heritage. She attended Lebanon schools and graduated from South Lebanon High School. She held a variety of jobs in her life--waitress, clerk, secretary-- but for most of her life she was a skilled home health provider, enabling others to remain comfortably in their own homes. She liked to travel and especially enjoyed remembering her travels with family members to such places as London, Paris, Venice, and Germany and Switzerland. She loved bargain hunting and thrift sales, and never let a family member leave at the end of a visit without some little gift she had been saving for them. She was a dedicated cat lover and had enjoyed the companionship of several cats over the years. She is remembered by her family as a glamorous person whose grooming and clothing were always impeccable, and who willingly indulged visiting little girls with nail polish and dress-up supplies.
She was preceded in death by her parents; by her sister, Theresa K Umberger and her husband, Edmund H Umberger; and nephew, Stefan H Umberger. She is survived by her long-time companion, David Levin of Lebanon; sister, Anne M Stefan and niece, Juliet A Umberger and her husband, George T Edwards, all of Carlisle; and niece, Margaret E Rothenbeck and her husband, J David Rothenbeck, and grandnephew, William H Rothenbeck, and his wife, Laurie, and children, Emma and Eli, all of Redmond, Wash. She is also survived by cousins, Charles B Hirschbock, Frank L Hirscbock, Dorothy M Miller, Jeanie H Dove, and Betsey H Arnold, all of the Lebanon area.
Cremation and inurnment services have been provided by Auer Cremation Services of Pennsylvania. Private interment at Mt Lebanon Cemetery will be held at a later date. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Humane Society of Lebanon County, 150 North Ramona Road, Myerstown, PA 17067; or another animal welfare organization. The family wishes to thank the staff at Stone Ridge Towne Center in Myerstown for the ecxcellent care they provided to Barbara in her final years.
