Organized at Augusta, ME. and mustered in November 5, 1861. Company F moved to Washington, D. C., March 14-19, 1862.

Bayard's Cavalry Brigade:
Army of Virginia
Army of the Potomac

NOTABLE SERVICE:
Battle of Cedar Mountain.
Battle of Bull Run.
Battle of Antietam.
Battle of Fredericksburg.
Battle of Gettysburg.
Battle of Todd's Tavern.
Surrender of Lee and his army.

Mustered out August 1, 1865.

This Regiment lost the greatest number killed in action of any Cavalry Regiment in the entire army: 15 Officers and 159 Enlisted men killed or mortally wounded; 3 Officers and 341 Enlisted men died of disease, for a total of 518.
