Actor, Author. He was the mentor, partner, and the eventual murderer of playwright Joe Orton. The early death of his mother and the later suicide of his father effected his outlook on life. An aspiring actor, he was accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art where he met Orton in 1951. Both tried acting, then writing with Halliwell supporting them with an inheritance. He has been credited with helping to polish Orton's personality and writing style. After both serving jail time for deliberately defacing a number of library books, Orton's career started to become successful and Halliwell's to remain obscure. In later years, Halliwell was prescribed drugs to combat his depression and frustration. He murdered Orton then committed suicide immediately after. Their ashes were mingled and scattered in the same garden. Two of his collaborative novels with Joe Orton were published in 2001.
