He was allegedly born in Itawamba County, Mississippi, on November 14, 1841 and claimed to be the last surviving veteran of the American Civil War serving in the Confederate Army during battle. Modern scholars and researchers have attested that he was too young to have fought in the war with the birth year being 1854 according to the Federal Census; he was enumerated as the son of George Washington Williams and Nancy Marcus.
