Death of Mr. Distel
The old folks are passing away. At 1:15 o'clock this morning the tolling fire bells denoted the death of one who has lived in Madison for many years. George Distel, the well-known stone-cutter, member of the Fire Department, Odd-Fellows, German Methodist and Grand Army man, surrendered to the inevitable shortly after midnight, after an illness lasting through several weeks.
Mr. Distel was born at Wachtersburg, Kuhrhessen, Germany, January 12, 1826; was married to Anna Elizabeth Austermuhle May 31, 1852. Mr. Distel leaves a wife and three grown daughters, one of whom is married and one married son, George W. Distel, the bricklayer and builder. He was a good neighbor, a sober and industrious citizen, and served the people satisfactorily for a time as SEXTON OF SPRINGDALE CEMETERY, near which he lived and in which he will be buried on Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock. It was his dying request that his remains be kept after death for seventy-two hours before interment.

George Distel enlisted as a Sergent on 24 August 1861 in Company B, 32nd Infantry Regiment Indiana and mustered out on 7 September 1864 at Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.
This regiment was also called the First German,as it was composed of German immigrants and the descendants of local German settlers.
George filed a pension for his service and his wife, Anna E., filed for a widow's pension after George's death in August 1895.

Next to George Distel's gravemarker is an iron stake with the shield respresenting the Knight's of Pythias "FCB" (Friendship, Charity, Benevolence). The building of the Syracuse Knight's of Pythias Lodge #104 located at 307 Jefferson Street is still standing and the name along with logo is beautifully carved above the entrance.
