In 1901, he began work for George Weed furniture and funeral business. He married Urah Baine in 1905 and bought the furniture & funeral business in 1924. He formed a partnership with Frederick Baine in 1926 and the business was sold to Clare Pickens in 1946. He continued to assist with the business part-time until a year before his death. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Lake Odessa Lions Club.
Walter and Urah had three daughters: Mardie Eloise (Mrs. Glen Edwins), Madge O (Mrs. Maynard Leak) and Genevieve M. (Mrs. George Moon).
