Hugh Welch Duncan, Esq, was born in Texas Township, Crawford County, Ohio. In 1877, his family moved to Bloomville, Seneca County, Ohio, and in June 1886, they moved to Bucyrus, Ohio. On November 2, 1887, Hugh moved to Los Angeles, California, where he was admitted to the bar in 1890. He married Gertrude May Membery near Selma, California, on January 25, 1894, Rev, Louis Sanford officiating. Hugh was a Master Mason in a lodge in Los Angeles. He lived on Bunker Hill. In 1905, after much research, Hugh Welch Duncan wrote a family history, "The Duncan and Gibson Families". It was published, and can be found online and in the Library of Congress. His grandfather, Andrew Duncan, great-grandfather John Gibson, great-grandfather Moses Coe, and great-great grandfather, Benjamin Coe, all fought in the War of Independence. The Coes are on his mother, Eliza Gibson's side of the family. Hugh's two older brothers died in the Civil War. Hugh and his brother Arthur were too young to fight in the war, being the youngest children of the family. As a result, they were very close, and named their only sons after each other. Arthur eventually followed Hugh to Los Angeles. as did their sister Sarah Jane Myers.
