MOUNT HOLLY - Ray Donald Abernathy, 79, died Aug. 26, 2011.

He was born in Gaston County, son of the late Carl and Gladys Pryor Abernathy.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Wagstaff Abernathy, a stepmother, Beulah Abernathy; four brothers, Albert, Douglas, Jack and Glenn Abernathy; one sister, Virginia Clawson and a granddaughter, Amy Hill.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and a lifelong member of Tuckaseegee Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Sunday school Director, choir member, and Boy Scout leader. Mr. Abernathy was loved by many people.

He is survived by three daughters, Jan Wilcox and husband David of Dallas, Donna Helton and husband Rick of Gastonia and Gina Helms and husband Mike of Charlotte; one grandson, PFC. Austin Ray Wilcox U.S. Marine Corps Camp Lejeune; two sisters, Elizabeth Noble of Belmont and Hazel Lutz of Mount Holly and a number of nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Abernathy will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Tuckaseegee Baptist Church with the Rev. Jason Marlowe officiating.

Interment will be at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly.
