Born in Kincardine, Tulliallan, Perthshire, Scotland which is now part of Fife.
Before her 1872 marriage to Samuel Maxwell, Catherine was a nurse in Glasgow. While her husband was at sea she and her three young children lived with her parents in Perth.
In 1883 she joined her husband in Boggabri, New South Wales; they then lived in Fiji for several years where their three younger children were born.
Later they settled in Brisbane, Queensland, where she, Samuel and their only daughter Helen all died young.
