He was the son of Priestly Allen Abernathy and Ella May Settle/Settles. He served with the U. S. Army Air Corps in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, during World War II, and later was a shipping and receiving clerk for the U. S. Civil Service at Tracy, California. He married (1) Josephine Eve Petricevic at Salt Lake City, Utah, on July 14, 1945. They had one daughter, and were divorced in 1971; (2) Frankie Ann Conner at Stevenson, Washington, on September 6, 1971. They resided at Gresham, Oregon.
