Isaac was a Brandywine Hundred farmer who was appointed 1st Lieutenant of the Brandywine Cavalry during the War of 1812. Later, he entered politics and in 1848 was elected Sheriff of New Castle County, at that time the chief law enforcement officer in the county.

He married Brandlin Glover and they had four children. After she died, he married Keziah Talley, who was also a grandchild of William Talley and Hannah Grubb.
