Robert E. "Bob" Bell, 87, was born January 16, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois and passed away on July 16, 2011 in Palm Desert, in his garden with his faithful Collie, Deacon, by his side.
Bob was raised in Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania, graduated a star athlete, and entered the University of Michigan in September 1942. He was a Phi Delta Theta.
He then enlisted in the USAA Corp, was called up in January 1943, and graduated as a 2nd Lt. fighter pilot in June 1944. Bob married Peggy Albright on September 7, 1944 in Moultrie, Georgia. They have two sons, Robert and Gary.
Bob was discharged in 1945, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a BSME in 1949, and was a member of Pi Tau Sigma, an honorary engineering fraternity.
In 1949, Bob joined the USAF as a 1st LT, was the project engineer on the F89, went to Korea, and retired in 1954 as a Captain. He joined Pacific Scientific Co., Los Angeles as a sales engineer from 1954-1974 and became a realtor in Huntington Harbour from 1974-1982.
In 1969, Dr. Robert Schuller remarried Bob and Peggy on their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary in the Tower of Hope Chapel. Bob and Peggy purchased a home at Marrakesh Country Club in Palm Desert in 1979 and moved there permanently in 1982, where Bob was a realtor until retirement in 1996.
He was a volunteer for the Tower of Hope and a pioneer docent at the Palm Springs Air Museum. Bob loved sailing and traveling abroad but most of all loved our National Parks here in the west where he repeated family trips with his twin grandchildren, Robert and Cora, who are each now married and have blessed Bob with four great-grandchildren. We will miss our beloved, gentle man.
Private interment will be at the Crystal Cathedral Memorial Gardens with Dr. Robert Schuller officiating.
