Politician and soldier. He attended Knox College (Galesburg, Illinois) as a member of the class of 1870. During the Civil War, he served the Union as a Corporal in Company A, 9th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Cavalry. Van Sant was Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1895 and served as Minnesota governor from 1901 to 1905. He was also a three-time delegate from Minnesota to the Republican National Convention and a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.
