By 1870, he lived with his mother's parents in Taylorsville, Spencer County, Kentucky before he relocated to Nelson County with his sister. There in 1885 he married Eliza King. After sometime, he and his family - along with his sister and her family - relocated to Indiana where they raised their families in a close knit community.
While in Mitchell, Lawrence County, Indiana - he offered his memories of enslavement and took part in the WPA Folk History concerning enslaved peoples in the United States.
