U.S. Congressman. He attended Trinity College, studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law as a patent attorney. Moved to California in 1856 and became editor of the San Francisco Mirror in 1861. During the Civil War, he was a Captain assistant quartermaster of United States Volunteers. After the war, he relocated to Nevada and was a member of the Nevada State Senate (1865-68). Returning to California, he was editor of San Francisco Herald and was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving (1883-85). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
