United States Naval Officer. A 1906 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, he saw action in the Nicaraguan campaign of 1912 and World War I. Promoted to Rear Admiral in 1938 and Vice Admiral in 1941, he was appointed Commander of the South Pacific Forces in charge of planning and execution of the invasion of the Solomon Islands in 1942. From 1943 to 1944 he was commander of the Hawaiian Sea Frontier, and in 1945 he was Commander of United States Naval forces in German waters. He retired in 1946.
