Catherine A. Norton (1851-1913) Murphy

Parents:
Michael Norton (c1825-?) and Bridget Mulligan (c1825-?).

Birth:
She was born in 1851 in Ireland.

Immigration:
She came to the United States around 1875 and lived in Boston, Massachusetts.

Marriage:
She married Patrick J. Murphy (1852-1922) on February 14, 1878 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Children:
Mary J. Murphy (1879-1943) who was a bookkeeper; John Murphy (1881-1895) who died as a youth at age 14; James Murphy (1882-?); Thomas Francis Murphy (1885-1969) who was born on June 13, 1885 in Scituate, Massachusetts and he died in San Francisco, California on March 8, 1969; and Catherine E. Murphy (1888-?).

Death:
She died on March 18, 1913 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Funeral notice:
Murphy. In Roxbury, March 18. Catherine A., beloved wife of Patrick J. Murphy (nee Norton). Funeral from her late residence, 82 Francis street. Friday, March 21, at 8:30 a m. Services at Mission Church at 9:30 a m. High mass of requiem will be announced later. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. (Source: The Boston Globe of Boston, Massachusetts on 21 March 1913)

Burial:
She was buried in Mount Cavalry Cemetery in Boston.

Rediscovery:
I was going through Familysearch on Monday, July 18, 2011 and searched in the database for any Mulligan - Norton children or marriages, and the result was James T. Norton (1849-1898) and Catherine A. Norton (1851-1913) of Boston, Massachusetts. The dates fit perfectly as a sibling of Patrick Norton. Patrick came from Boston and was naturalized in Boston according to a photocopy of a naturalization record that was passed down in the family. The connection to our Michael Norton (c1825-?) and Bridget Mulligan (c1825-?) is still tentative. There is no document that ties James T. Norton and Catherine A. Norton (1851-1913) Murphy to Patrick J. Norton. The only evidence is the name of the parents. I called the cemetery on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 and the said she was buried with John Murphy age 14 who died March 25, 1895; and Thomas Murphy on March 12, 1969 at age 84.

Research:
Researched and written by Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) for Findagrave starting on July 18, 2011. Updated on August 24, 2019 with the text of her funeral notice. Updated on August 5, 2021 by changing her marriage date from February 11, 1878 to February 14, 1878, February 11, 1878 was most likely the day she received her marriage license, not the date of the wedding.
