Elizabeth Brandon passed away Sunday, September 22, 2002, in Galveston, Texas, after several years of declining health. She was born in Wolkowysk, Poland in 1913 to Samuel and Chasia Kaplan. She was one of three children, Marek, Elizabeth, and Naomi. She attended the Conservatory of Music in Vilno and was an accomplished classical pianist. She attended the University of Vilno and completed her studies at the University of Warsaw. In 1935, Elizabeth married Sylvan Brandon, M.D., her beloved husband, who preceded her in death in 1996.

In 1936, Elizabeth and Sylvan moved to Paris, France, where she received her Masters Degree in French from the Sorbonne. They immigrated to the United States in 1939 and settled in Houston in 1940 to join her family, William and Frances Salman. In 1947, Elizabeth Brandon began her teaching career at the University of Houston, and her doctoral studies at Laval University in Quebec, Canada. She received her Ph.D. in French from Laval University in 1955. During the course of her 33 years as Professor of French at the University of Houston, she served as chair of the French Department. Twice she was awarded the Palmes Academiques by the French Ministry of Education for excellence in teaching.

She was one of the foremost authorities in French Folklore of Louisiana. Her published works are in the Smithsonian Institute and in the United States Library of Congress. She published numerous articles and gave lectures throughout the world.

She was loved by her family and friends, respected by her peers, and inspirational to her many students.

Elizabeth Brandon is survived by her children, Anne Brandon, Michael and Carla Brandon; grandchildren, Aaron, Alexis, and Joshua; sister, Naomi Warren; nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Graveside services will be Tuesday, September 24, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Beth Yeshuran Cemetery, Allen Parkway, Houston.

The family asks that any donations in memory of Elizabeth Brandon be made to the Houston Holocaust Museum and Education Center, Houston, Texas.
