US Congressman. Moving to Nebraska, in 1916, he was employed in various positions with a railroad company and the tobacco business, (1922-23). He went on to become a very successful businessman in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, where he established the only gasoline refinery with his own chain of gas stations in several states. In 1933, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-third Congress, serving until 1935. He was not a candidate for re-nomination and was also an unsuccessful candidate for several public offices. During World War II, he served as a Major in the U.S. Army Air Corps, (1942-45). After the war, he was elected Mayor of Scottsbluff, in 1947 and founded the new village Terrytown, in 1949. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1956 and served in the Nebraska State Legislature, (1953, 57-59, 63-74). Retiring from politic, he operated his Terry Carpenter Company, until his death at age 78.
