Mrs. Ann Ruth Odiorne, 90, passed peacefully, in he sleep, overnight on Wednesday October 13, 2010, at home. Preceded by her husband, Howard Hatch "Tom" Odiorne, 87.
Ann was born August 2, 1920 to W. Monroe Smith and Dicey Wood Smith of Roanoke, Alabama.
Their loving marriage began in Miami, Florida. Ann met her husband, Tom, while both were serving in the Army in Miami Beach during WWII. Ann was a nurse and Tom became pilot of a crash boat, part of "the Army's navy in the Pacific theatre. ."Hotels were converted to barraks and hospitals during this time. Over 500,000 service members went through this area - so what a fortunate happenstance that these two young people happened to meet. Within weeks, they fell in love and in their spare time wandered around what is now the Art Deco capitol of the world-Miami's South Beach. Tom and Ann were married May 6, 1944 at Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
While an R.N. at Fort Logan in Denver, Ann found her second love, Colorado. After living in several states, Tom and Ann relocated to Denver and then Littleton where Ann became a full-time Mom raising six children.
Ann was a devoted mother, hostess, rockhound, gardner and an amazing cook, with a repertoire of Southern-style foods. While both Ann and Tom absolutely loved raising kids, later in life they traveled every winter to their adopted second home of Navarre Beach, Florida to gather shells on the snow-white Gulf shore.
Ann was not interested in 'rocks' when she and Tom were married but out of self-defense, being married to a geologist, she became a TRUE ROCK HOUND. Ann became very knowledgeable on the rock subject in years to come. In the late sixties she and Tom joined the Littleton Gem and Mineral Club where they became very active. They were made 'LIFE MEMBERS' of that club in 1983.
Ann is survived by their six children: Don (Candy), Idaho; Sharon McEnany (Pat), Utah; Connie Lipinski (Nick), Arizona; Ken, Colorado; Tim, Florida; and Suzanne (Paul) Webster, Colorado; numerous grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A celebration of Ann and Tom's life was held at their Littleton home on October 16, 2010.
