James was the son of John Allison and Lula "Lulie" Pulliam. He married Lura Hockensmith and they were the parents of three sons, Johnny Lee Allison, who proceeded him in death, Jimmy T. (Julie) Allison, and, Larry Gene (Rebecca) Allison. They were the grandparents of three granddaughters, Robin Christine (Gary) Buchholz, Mary Ashley (Adam) Jones, and, Jean Ellen (Zach) Allison-Howell, and one grandson, Larry Gene Allison Jr.; and, great-grandparents of Alanah Howell, and Kaylie Howell.
