US Congressman. During the Civil War he was commissioned as Major of the 134th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, being mustered in on August 22, 1862. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on December 8, 1862, he fought at the Battle of Fredericksburg, where he was wounded. He resigned his commission on February 13, 1863. He was elected as a Republican to represent first Pennsylvania's 23rd Congressional District, then the 26th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1874 to 1875, and from 1877 to 1879 (his election was facilitated by the resignation of Congressman Ebenezer McJunkin). He was the older brother of Iowa Congressman William George Thompson.
