James was a prominent attorney in Kansas City, and at one time, was an attorney for the City of Independence.

He was killed in the Hyatt Regency Skywalk Collapse in July, 1981, while getting a drink at the bar, which was below the walkway.

He is also known for starting the Queen City Baseball League in Independence.
