During operation LZ Torch, in the early morning hours of 11 June 1968, near Khe Sanh, Charlie Battery came under a heavy volume of motar and small arms, with automatic weapons fire supporting an aggressive assalt by a company size North Vietnamese Army Force.
PFC James Phipps was killed by small arms fire. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.
