Private First Class James Alvin Phipps joined Charlie Battery, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, Republic of South Vietnam on 5 January 1968.
He was a field artillery cannoneer 0811 assigned to gun 5, 105 howitzers.
During operation LZ Torch, in the early morning hours of 11 June 1968, near Khe Sanh, Charlie Battery came under a heavy volume of motar and small arms, with automatic weapons fire supporting an aggressive assalt by a company size North Vietnamese Army Force.
PFC James Phipps was killed by small arms fire. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.
