Long time Sierra Club member and volunteer. Spent many if not most Sundays on Local Walk hikes over Mount Tamalpais, frequently leading. His mantra was,"Less talking, more walking." Devotee of classical music and opera, he made a science of attaining the best vantage points in Standing Room at the San Francisco Opera. He enlisted in the U.S. Army ten days after Pearl Harbor, serving initially in Coast Artillery and then on an unspecified South Pacific island in an MP unit until the end of the war.
