U.S. Senator. Along with his father, he was a successful n mining, farming, cotton mills and commercial enterprises. He attended Harvard University, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1881 and practiced in Portland, Oregon, (1881-86). He was a member of the Oregon House of Representatives, (1887-99). In 1907, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1913. After leaving Congress, he was resident of the National Republican Progressive League and resumed his former pursuits in Oregon, Massachusetts and worked in the newspaper business, in the District of Columbia, until his death at age 85.
