Charles William Peck,78,died Tuesday,Feb 25,1997, at his home near La Grande.
A service will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Island City Chuch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop Duane Baxter officiating.Dedication of grave and vault interment will follow at the Cove Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley or from 11 a.m. to service time Saturday at the Island City chapel.
Mr.Peck was born Oct. 20, 1918,at Hot Lake to Howard Milton and Pearl Frances (Newkirk) Peck. He attended schools in La Grande, graduating in 1938. He married Luana Thompson on June 14, 1939, at the Salt Lake City Mormon Temple.
He worked for Union County and later for Stang Lumber. He was a voluteer firefighter from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. In 1945 he bought City Garbage Service, which he operated for several years. He also worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, for two La Grande car companies and the Mont Emily Lumber. Co.
Mr. Peck was a member of the Third Ward of the LDS Church. When he was younger, he sang in a church quartet. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved the mountains and enjoyed driving in them.
Survivors include his wife, Luana Peck of La Grande; sons and daughters-in-law, James V. and Linda Peck of La Grande and Dennis G. and Carolyn Peck of Dallas, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law, Tanya Lee and Kevin Crouch of Brentwood, Tenn.; grandchildren, Dustin and Stacy Peck, Heather and Greg Giles, Jason Peck, Jeana and Bill Broyles and Kevin; great-grandchildren, Dylan and Sheraea Giles; brother, Elmer Peck of La Grande; sister, Thelma Chadwick of Hayden Lake, Idaho; and other relatives and friends.
His sisters, Amy Markworth and Frances Campbell, died earlier.
