World War II United States Army Officer. A 1932 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he was stationed as Captain and commander of Battery B, 55th Coastal Artillery at Fort Kamehameha at Honolulu, Hawaii when the Imperial forces of Japan attacked the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor. When it became apparent the planes flying over his position were not American, he and another soldier immediately manned machine guns and fired at the Japanese attackers. At 8:10AM he shot down one of the Mitsubishi A6M Zeros that were flying over him, and he is credited as the first American to down a Japanese plane during World War II. He would serve in the United States Army until he retired with the rank of Colonel.
