The funeral services for the late Mrs. Hurxthal W. Smith, were held at her home on in Locust street, Clearfield, at 2 o'clock this Tuesday afternoon, and were attended by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends, amid the silent remembrance of beautiful flowers from absent ones. The Episcopal service was read by Reverend Joseph F. John, and the pall bearers were Judge A. O. Smith, William E. Wallace, H S. Whiteman, George R. Bigler, William I. Swoope. Burial was made in Hillcrest cemetery. Josephine Hartshorne Smith was born on February 19, 1840, at Curwensville, and there spent her childhood and youth with her parents; Benjamin Hartshorne and wife.
On Oct. 4, 1864, she was married by Reverend William Burchfield to Hurxthal W. Smith, with whom a home was established in Clearfield, where she lived, until the time of her death, which occurred on February 28, 1915, only a few months after the golden anniversary of her wedding, had been quietly celebrated in her home with her husband and children. She was the mother of nine children Josiah
H., Pascaline Bertha, Stanley L., Hurxthal Van V., Florence, Clement W., Dora E., Katherine M., and Thornton R., of whom Josiah H. Smith, died in early manhood, and Florence, Clement W., Dora E. and Thorton R. died in infancy. The mother is survived by her husband, Hurxthal W. Smith, two sons, Stanley L. Smith, of New York city, and Hurxthal Van V. Smith of Muskogee, Okla., and two
daughters, Mrs. Pascaline S. Tonner, of Clearfield and Mrs. Katherine Frease of Canton, Ohio, also by her niece, Miss, Isabella Ten Eyche, who has made her home with the family for many years. For more than fifty years, Mrs. Smith devoted a life of great mental, moral and physical strength to the duties and
cares of her home, giving to her husband, the consuming love and affection of a wife, and to her children, the tender care and character forming control of a mother. Possessing a strong and stately personality, with a mild and modest manner, she exercised a commanding influence upon all who, came within range of her home. A wide circle of relations and friends habitually appealed to her good judgment, and never appealed in vain, for counsel and comfort to meet the problem of life. In her religious life, she was confirmed as a member of St. Andrew Protestant Episcopal church in Clearfield shortly after her marriage, and continued to the end of her life, as a faithful and consistent attendant, upon the divine services of the church. She was for many years, a leading spirit in the sewing society, which contributed largely to the support of the church. Unselfish in every thought and deed, untiring in her work for friends and family, unyielding in her view of right and wrong, she never trifled with the good nor compromised with the evil. She lived and died for others.
