Gustav Leu's father, who was also named Gustav, was born in Stettin, Germany, then immigrated to the United States between 1908 and 1909. His mother, Alice Nageborn, was the daughter of Wilhelm and Helene Nageborn, who immigrated from Stettin in 1881. Wilhelm Nageborn was co-owner of a machine shop in Detroit, Michigan and had filed patents for a variety of inventions. Gustav was born and raised in Detroit and spent his adult life working as a printer and a farmer. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trap shooting. During W. W. II., Gustav served in the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945.
