At her request, no service will be held for LaVerne Gladys Ballou, widow of Dixieland Jazz musician Ralph ''Monte'' Ballou. Mrs. Ballou died of causes related to age Dec. 6 in her Southeast Portland home. She was 73.
Mrs. Ballou was born on May 6, 1919, in Culdrum Township, Morrison County, Minnesota. Her maiden name was Smith. She married Mr. Ballou on March 8, 1944.
The couple owned the Diamond Horseshoe Club in downtown Portland in the early 1950s. Mr. Ballou died on Oct. 7, 1991.
Survivors include brother, Rudolph Smith of Buxton; and sister, Mildred Beckley of Sauk Centre, Minn.
Burial was in Lone Fir Cemetery.
